The shadow and the light

A haibun written during the Eremos winter retreat of July 26, 2025 in response to George Herbert’s poem Love.

“You must sit down,” says Love, “and taste my meat.”
What comfort breaks like bread at this retreat.
And bursts like molten cheese or chocolate sweet –
A lava flow on laden plates to eat.

My shadow, I fear –
Yet I did not make the sun;
God supplies the light.
